Tchaikovsky featured at Jan. 31 concert

LONG BEACH SYMPHONY

Long Beach Symphony invites patrons to experience orchestral brilliance with Tchaikovsky and Strauss on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 7:30 p.m. at the Terrace Theater, 300 E. Ocean Blvd., Long Beach.

Under the baton of Music Director Eckart Preu, the concert features two monumental works of the orchestral repertoire.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35 was crafted during a tumultuous time in his life, and this beloved concerto shines with the spirit of renewal—its soaring melodies, lyricism, and virtuosity make it one of the most cherished works in the repertoire. The symphony will welcome internationally celebrated violinist Tai Murray, whose artistry brings this music to life.

Richard Strauss’ Don Quixote, Op. 35, is filled with imagination and color, Strauss’ symphonic portrait of Cervantes’ legendary knight invites listeners directly into Don Quixote’s world—from whimsical daydreams to heroic (and humorous) adventures. This vivid musical storytelling features principal cellist Cécilia Tsan as Don Quixote and principal violist Andrew Duckles as his loyal companion Sancho Panza, creating a captivating dialogue at the heart of the performance.

Audiences are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy the Terrace Theater’s fountains and fire pits. The Pre-Concert Talk with Eckart Preu will be held at 6:30 p.m., inviting patrons to get further acquainted with the evening’s repertoire and the “backstories,” with special discussions to include the evening’s featured artists. Doors open at 6 p.m. People are welcome to mingle at The 3rd Space and purchase beverages to sip and enjoy in the concert hall.

“Pairing Tchaikovsky’s deeply expressive Violin Concerto with Strauss’ vivid storytelling in Don Quixote creates a musical journey unlike any other. ,” says Long Beach Symphony President Kelly Ruggirello. “It’s a concert that speaks to both heart and mind.”

Tickets start at $39. Subscriptions to include the three remaining concerts in the Classical series start at $75. Visit longbeachsymphony.org or call 562-436-3203 for tickets and more information.
