Researchers share initial findings about Leisure World

PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY

Social science researchers from Pepperdine University have released preliminary results of research conducted in Leisure World earlier this year.

The research centers on seniors’ attitudes toward assistive technology and independent living. Responses were collected at GRF dances and through a digital survey shared in LW Live and the LW Weekly. Over 200 residents participated.

The initial results of their analysis found:

• Most respondents feel younger than they are. The average respondent was 76 years old and “felt” 65 years old. Most respondents felt about 10 years younger than their chronological age.

• There was almost an equal split in how respondents felt about the future: 35% had a limited view of the future; 32% felt ambiguous; and 33% felt expansive.

• Respondents felt good about their socioeconomic status. When asked about their status compared to others, 29% of respondents felt better off; 51% felt somewhat better; 17% felt about the same; 2% felt somewhat worse off; and 1% felt worse off.

• Respondents shared similar values. When asked what motivates them to stay healthy, they frequently cited family, grandchildren, travel, maintaining independence and quality of life.

• Most respondents plan to age in place. Of those surveyed, 89% had a strong intent to age in place. On average, they plan to age in place until they are 92 years old.

The researchers, Dr. Doreen Shanahan and Dr. Jillian Alderman, will continue to analyze the results for an upcoming academic journal submission.
