RHYTHMS OF JINDO: A TWO WEEK CULTURAL JOURNEY

by Chris Kim

President, LWSB Korean Drum Club

From March 9-20, I experienced 12 of the most vibrant and soul-stirring days of my life. Members of the Leisure World Seal Beach Korean Drum Club were selected for a prestigious overseas residency program at the National Gugak Center in Jindo, South Korea.

Our group consisted of 10 individuals: seven Leisure World residents—including myself, Audrey Kim, Sylvia Kim, Patricia Sunwoo, Choonhwa Shin, Myunghun Hwang and Hyunsoon Lee— along with our instructor and two additional guests.

42 Hearts Beating as One

Upon arriving at the Jindo National Gugak Center, we were met by three other international teams: a senior dance troupe and a youth performing arts team from Russia, and a Gugak ensemble from London, UK. Though we represented different nations and generations, all 42 participants were united by a love for Korean rhythm. Our focus was Samulnori—traditional percussion. Guided by a master instructor in his 30s—a true elite in the field—we practiced tirelessly from Monday to Friday, culminating in a grand final performance where we showcased the fruits of our labor.

World-Class Facilities and Southern Hospitality The hospitality at the National Gugak Center was exceptional. From the dedicated shuttle bus from Incheon Airport to the comfortable double-occupancy dormitories and the delicious traditional meals provided three times a day, every detail was managed by a professional staff of over 150. A particular highlight was attending the Saturday public performances, where we saw residents from as far as Mokpo gather to celebrate their heritage, proving Jindo’s role as a vital cultural hub. A Night of Celebration and Exploration Our final evening was marked by a joyous farewell party. We shared pizza, chicken, and laughter as each team performed traditional songs and dances from their respective countries. It was a true global festival.

Following the residency, some of us took the opportunity to explore the southern coast further, spending four days in the beautiful port city of Yeosu. The fresh air, stunning coastal scenery, and rich history of the Jeolla province left a lasting impression on us all.

Looking Forward

Jindo, the third-largest island in Korea, is a hidden gem with immense tourism potential. While the quiet rural life reflects an aging population, its natural beauty and cultural depth are world-class.

We returned to Seal Beach not just with improved drumming skills, but with a renewed sense of pride and friendship. We look forward to sharing the spirit of Jindo with our fellow Leisure World neighbors and hope to invite our wonderful instructors to visit us here in California sometime in the future.
