The author J.R.R. Tolkien has a great quote about time: “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.” The best way believers can make decisions is to prayerfully ask the Holy Spirit to lead them each day in his ways and in light of God’s word.

God’s word is full of wise counsel concerning how people should spend the days God has blessed them with.

To use the days God has given as an offering of worship to him, believers should pay careful attention to what Ephesians 5:16 says: “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore, do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.”

“Circumspectly” is not a word often used today. It means “looking around” or “being cautious.” In a biblical context, it refers to living with careful consideration, wisdom, and prudence, especially in one’s walk with God. The concept is closely associated with living a life that is pleasing to God, marked by vigilance and moral integrity. In the early church, as it is today, the exhortation to walk wisely was a reminder to remain steadfast in faith and to be a light in a dark world.
