LW Men’s Golf League

Nine golfers of the Leisure World Men’s Golf League competed at the 4,000-yard, par 62 David L. Baker Executive Golf Course in Fountain Valley on Aug. 15. The weather was cool and overcast, and lasted for the entire round. The course was fairly dry, and fairways and greens were in good shape. The tee boxes needed help.

With good playing conditions and decent weather, there were a number of great scores and seven of the nine players shot at or below net par.

There were six birdies—two by Sam Choi, and one each by Gary Stivers, Dave LaCascia, Gene Vesely and Randy Massaro. Stivers was closest to the pin on the 110-yard par 3 third hole, and Clay Fischer was closest to the pin on the 130-yard par 3 12th hole. Stivers and Vesely had fewest putts.

A flight winners (net score: gross minus handicap): Stivers, 10 under 52, first place; Choi, 8 under 54, second; LaCascia and Fujio Norihiro, 4 under 58, third; Fischer, even par, fourth.

B flight winners: Massaro, 9 under 53, first place; Ron Jackson, 5 under 57, second; Bob Munn and Vesely, third.

Eight golfers gathered at the 6,000-yard par 71 Willowick Golf Course in Santa Ana on Aug. 18. The weather was overcast, but the clouds eventually burnt off by the start of the back nine and then it got very warm.

The greens continued to be in excellent shape, but the tee boxes and fairways are not improving even though considerable effort has been expended recently to clear out the molehills and smooth out the uneven and pock-marked fairways. Tee boxes were very ragged and felt more like the rough. The rough is PGA level, with great difficulty finding any balls that enter this area. With the odd weather and poor course conditions, only three of the eight golfers shot net at or below par.

There were no birdies owing to course length and fairway conditions. Clay Fischer was closest to the pin on both the 140-yard par 3 fourth hole and 12th hole. Chris Lankford had fewest putts in the A flight, and Bruno Santillo had the fewest for the B.

A flight winners: Fischer, 3 under 68, first place; Sam Choi, 2 under 69, second; Dave LaCascia and Gary Stivers, 2 over 73, third; Jae Choi and Chris Lankford, fourth.

B flight winners: Santillo, 7 under 65, first place; Bob Munn, second.

The Monday and Friday golf leagues play at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. These courses are always quite full, so advance league reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.

There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter. Rewards are given for low net in each flight, birdies, closest to the pin on two par threes, and for the lowest number of putts in each flight. Holes-in-one and eagles (2 under par) are generously rewarded. Those interested in playing can contact Gary Stivers at 714-313-3697 or Dave LaCascia at 801-674-5975.
