Shred important documents for free on Nov. 10

See page 6 GOLDEN AGE FOUNDATION EVENTS

The Golden Age Foundation (GAF) will host the final shredding event of the year on Tuesday, Nov. 10, in the Clubhouse 2 parking lot from 10 a.m.-noon. Donations are appreciated.

All bags holding documents to be shredded must be untied. Bags that have tied handles will be rejected. Volunteers must be able to quickly glance in the bags to ensure that items meet the standard requirements:

• No magazines or newspapers.

• Staples and paper clips must be removed.

• No X-ray film.

• No contaminated bags. In order to have the smoothest event possible, the GAF reminds residents of the following:

• Do not arrive earlier than 10 a.m.; no one will be there to guard bags or documents.

• Place shredding bags in the passenger seat and stay in the car. GAF volunteers will take the bags out of the car.

• Drop items and go; there will not be any chairs to sit and wait.

• Do not bring documents in a cardboard box. The GAF will only accept untied plastic or paper bags.

• No electronic devices will be accepted. People can drop off e-waste on Nov. 14 to be recycled. See right for more information.

The next shredding service will be on March 9.

••• Battery and E Waste Recycling Nov. 14 The GAF will once again team up with Teens Against EWaste for a battery and e-waste recycling event on Saturday, Nov. 14, in the Amphitheater parking lot from 10 a.m.-noon. GRF ID is required.

GAF volunteers and teenagers in the program will collect approved batteries for recycling, including alkaline, carbon zinc, nickel cadmium (NiCd), nickel metal-hydride (NiMH), lithium ion (Li-Ion), lithium metal, silver oxide, button cell batteries and all other dry-cell batteries. This includes all household batteries, cell phone and laptop batteries, and small, button, type batteries.

People are asked to place lithium and hearing aid batteries in a separate bag to align with recycling requirements. This service is for Leisure World residents’ personal household batteries only; no business batteries will be accepted. This event keeps LW’s waste fees low and the planet clean.

••• Become an Income Tax Volunteer The AARP free federal income tax filing program, sponsored by the GAF, needs volunteers for the 2027 year.

Volunteers will provide free tax preparation and e-filing to LW residents. Previous experience is not necessary, the GAF and AARP will provide all the training and support needed to provide great service to the community. Open positions include: Tax Aide: Work directly with taxpayers to prepare their tax returns (1-3 days a week for 4-5 hours). Must have computer literacy.

Client Facilitator: Greet clients and help organize their documents (1-3 days a week for 3-4 hours).

Telephone Assistant: Schedule appointments for clients (one day a week for 5-6 hours). Must have a reliable cell phone to book appointments.

All positions must be available to attend training in January and work 1-3 days a week during the tax season from Feb. 1-April 7. To apply or receive more information, call Chris White at 310-968-3445. For more information or to become a GAF volunteer, text 562-301-5339.
