LW Men’s Golf League
Twelve golfers of the Leisure World Men’s Golf League competed at the 5,800-yard, par 70 River View Golf Course in Santa Ana on Aug. 1. The weather was initially overcast, but the clouds quickly burnt off and it became a lovely morning to play golf. Tees, fairways and greens were in excellent shape with little to no water in the riverbed, which has to be crossed five times during the course of the round. With the good weather and course conditions, 10 of the 12 golfers shot net at or below par.
There were eight birdies —two by Jim Goltra and one each by Gary Stivers, Sam Choi, Dave LaCascia, Clay Fischer, Dom Bautista and Bob Simon. Goltra was closest to the pin on the 150-yard par 3 second hole, and on the 110-yard par 3 ninth hole it was Choi. Fujio Norihiro and Goltra tied for fewest putts in A flight, and Bob Munn had the fewest for the B.
A flight winners (net score: gross minus handicap): Norihiro, 9 under 61, first place; LaCascia and Fischer, 6 under 64, second; Goltra, 3 under 67, third; Choi, 2 under 68, fourth; Chris Lankford, even par 70, fifth; Stivers and Simon, sixth.
B flight winners: Bautista, 4 under 66, first place; Bill Zurn, 2 under 68, second; Munn and Randy Massaro, third.
Sixteen golfers challenged the 5,600-yard par 71 Meadowlark Golf Course in Huntington Beach on Aug. 4. The weather was initially very overcast, but that went away quickly. With the full sun, the wind picked up dramatically, making tee shots and approaches interesting. Tees, fairways and greens were in excellent shape with some muddy fairway areas slowly recovering from the rains of last winter. Even with the windy conditions, nine of the 16 golfers shot net at or below par.
There were four birdies— one each by Fujio Norihiro, Bob Simon, Jae Choi and Steve Earl. Jae Choi was closest to the pin on the 140-yard par 3 seventh hole, and Dave LaCascia was closest to the pin on the 140-yard, dead into the wind, par 3 16th hole. Gary Stivers and Randy Massaro had fewest putts.
A flight winners (net score: gross minus handicap): Clay Fischer, 5 under 66, first place; Norihiro, Jim Goltra and Chris Lankford, 3 under 68, second; Sam Choi and Stivers, 1 under 70, third; Jae Choi and Simon, even par, fourth; LaCascia and Earl, fifth.
B flight winners: Massaro, 4 under 66, first place; Bautista, second; Tom Ross and Bruno Santillo, third; Scott Slade and Bob Munn, fourth.
The Monday and Friday golf leagues play at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. These courses are always quite full, so advance league reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.
There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter. Rewards are given for low net in each flight, birdies, closest to the pin on two par threes, and for the lowest number of putts in each flight. Holes-in-one and eagles (2 under par), are generously rewarded. Those interested in playing can contact Gary Stivers at 714-313-3697 or Dave LaCascia at 801- 674-5975.
