Recent events have spotlighted new interest in the death penalty. Nadal Hasan, an American soldier who killed 14 and wounded 32 others at Fort Hood in Texas in 2009, is scheduled to be executed by firing squad on Dec. 3. Originally, the execution was to be televised, but the viewing was called off on Oct. 16. It is the first firing squad execution since 1945. Another death penalty event occurred on Sept. 30, when the state of Tennessee tried to execute Christa Pike, who has spent 30 years on death row, by lethal injection and failed.

According to the Pew Research Foundation, 66% of Americans support the death penalty, but many countries and states have abandoned the practice. Club President Dave Silva will present a PowerPoint presentation showing how capital punishment evolved, as well as the arguments for and against the death penalty.
