Summertime Hydration Tips

Dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluids than it takes in. Sweating is one way to lose fluid on a hot day, but there are myriad ways to avoid dehydration once the hot weather kicks in.

• Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink water. Thirst is the brain’s way to warn people that they are dehydrated. A proactive approach can help prevent dehydration, especially outdoors.

• Take breaks for water and pour yourself a glass of water even when having coffee or tea. When reaching for a mid-afternoon snack, pour yourself another glass of water.

• Keep a water journal. Documenting a daily water intake is one way to overcome forgetfulness to stay hydrated. Smartphone apps like Water Reminder and Plant Nanny can also help people remember to drink water throughout the day.

• Drinking water isn’t the only way to stay hydrated. Choose foods that are loaded with water, such as berries, bell peppers and grapes.
