CDs For Seniors Club
The CDs for Seniors Club will meet Thursday, June 18, at 1 p.m. in Clubhouse 3, Room 3.
Often at the CDs for Seniors meetings, members do presentations about musical artists. At the April meeting, Susie Ralston spoke about an artist of whom she is quite proud and loves—her brother, Les Thompson. Anyone who recognizes the band “Willmore City Moonshiners” was probably a student at Wilson High School in Long Beach during the ‘60s. Les played the guitar and mandolin in that group.
In 1966, Les and a couple of band members formed a new musical band, “The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.” In 1967 they had the hit record, “Mr. Bojangles.” The rest is history. After a few years with the band, Les changed direction and started working at Paramount Pictures and freelanced with musical venues. He later relocated to Virginia, where he began performing folk and traditional Appalachian music. Throughout the years, he has never stopped writing songs. Susie completed her presentation by playing a piece titled, “Made By Hand.”
