Shotgun scramble is Sept. 30; sign-ups Sept. 8

LW MEN'S GOLF CLUB

Golfers are reminded to repair their ball marks on the greens.

A shotgun scramble will be held for Wednesday, Sept. 30. There is a $10 entry fee. Sign-ups will be available at all men’s and women’s tournaments beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8, and at all tournaments to follow. The last day to sign up is Sept. 28, and players must have a club handicap to play.

There will be a free potluck picnic immediately afterward in Clubhouse 2 at 1 p.m. Sign up for the tournament and also list potluck submission. Main courses, salads, bread, sides and desserts will be needed. Drinks and utensils will be provided. Women’s and men’s club members and significant others are welcome at the picnic.

Fifty-one men of the LW Men’s Golf Club met at the Turtle Lake Golf Course on Aug. 26. It was a very hot, sunny and humid morning.

The golfers teed off starting at 7:30 a.m. with each man competing for best net scores, four circle holes, and two closest to the pin challenges. This tournament the players initially teed off from the red tees on the front nine, and then the blue tees on the back.

The unrelenting heat has caused some interesting playing conditions with numerous fairway bare spots, several significant green repairs, and chewed up tees. It was surprising that 27 of the 51 men scored net at or under par. There were 51 birdies and 10 circle hole winners.

Closest to the pin on hole No. 7 was Bob Johnston at 3 feet 10 inches, and on No. 16 it was Noe Alcaraz at 7 feet 2 inches. Average net score for the round was 58.2 or just more than four strokes over par. Low net score for the round was Dave Winn at 9 under par 45, followed by Ron Steele at 8 under 46. Low gross for the round was Steele at 1 under 53, followed by Mike Mayfield at even par 54, and Dennis McMonigle at 1 over 55.

A flight winners (handicaps of 0-5): Mayfield, first place; Gene Archambault, second; Glenn Barry, third; Pat Paternoster, Yong J. Kim, Kevin Childress and Johnston, fourth.

B flight winners (handicaps of 6-12): Steele, first place; Mc-Monigle, second; Jun Um, third; Dave LaCascia, Ralph Koizumi, Richard Yokomi, Jae H. Lee and Joon Sup Yoon, fourth; Mark Tal, fifth; Bruce Bowles, sixth.

C flight winners (handicaps of 13-18): Winn, first place; Daniel Mahoney, second; Won G. Park, third; Won H. Park, Art Salazar, Joel Kellum and Mike Fennessy, fourth; Jon Russell, fifth; Todd Chidcheter and Ben Benjamins, sixth.

The next men’s tournament is Sept. 9. Those scheduled or who plan to play in any tournament and cannot should contact Alan Sewell at 541-324-8558 or Dave LaCascia at 801-674-5975 as soon as possible. Arrive 10-15 minutes prior to scheduled tee time and be ready to play. Check bulletin boards for the tournament schedule if there are any questions about starting times.
