LW Men’s Golf League

Aug. 24 found 11 members of the Leisure World Men’s Golf League at Meadowlark Golf Course in Huntington Beach under sunny and clear skies with high humidity. Expectations were that the morning would heat up quickly, and by round’s end the temperatures were well into the upper 80s. A light wind made the last few holes tolerable, and cold drinks were a welcome end to the round. At just 5,600 yards, with narrow fairways, severe elevation changes, many sand traps and diabolically placed water hazards, Meadowlark challenges everyone.

Six of the 11 golfers scored at or below net par, and there were three birdies—one each by Chris Lankford, Bruno Santillo and Scott Slade, who missed an eagle on the uphill 300-yard par 4 12th hole by four inches. The two closest to the pin challenges were both won by Clay Fisher, and Fujio Norihiro and Randy Massaro had fewest putts for the round.

A flight winners (handicaps of 1-19): Lankford, first place; Fisher, second; Norihiro, third; Gary Stivers and Santillo, fourth; Steve Earl and Sam Choi, fifth.

B flight winner (handicaps of 20 and higher): Massaro, first place; Slade, second; Bob Munn, third; Tom Ross, fourth.

The league plays every Monday at one of four local courses within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. Advance league reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.
