New guidelines in place for next shredding event
GAF EVENTS
Twelve Golden Age Foundation (GAF)volunteers worked together under the warm summer sun and humidity to process over 600 shareholders cars at its shredding event on July 14. From 10 a.m.-noon, vehicles created a long line on Oakmont Road waiting to drop off items to be shredded, and GAF volunteers worked hard to process each person and keep the line running quickly. At the end of the event, 37 barrels were filled with documents to be shredded.
The GAF continues its dropand- go method because it keeps things running efficiently and is convenient for residents, since they don’t need to get out of their cars. However, there are few issues that have come up during the past few shredding events that the GAF needs to address.
Shareholders cannot bring newspapers, file folders, binders, junk mailers, or X-ray copies to be shredded. These items will be rejected. In the future, the GAF will also reject tied bags because they make it difficult for volunteers to check the bags to make sure all items in the bags are acceptable.
Prescription bottles are not accepted under any circumstances.
Additionally, the shredding service is only for Leisure World shareholders’ personal and sensitive documents. It is not for business documents.
By working together and adhering to the GAF’s guidelines, it will ensure all shareholders experience a quick and easy disposal of and shred sensitive documents.
The GAF would like to thank those who generously donated during the shredding event. The donations collected on July 14 were just short of $900 and will be used to help the GAF continue to provide free services like the shredding event to the community.

The next shredding event will be in Nov. 10 in the Clubhouse 2 parking lot from 10 a.m.-noon.
••• Battery Recycling July 28 The GAF will host a battery recycling and e-waste collection event, in collaboration with Teen Against e-waste, on Tuesday, July 28, from 10 a.m.-noon in the Clubhouse 2 parking lot. GRF ID is required.
Teens Against E-Waste is a student-run, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. It aims to raise public awareness of the pressing issue of e-waste, take action towards a greener planet, and engage teenage leaders due to a strong belief in youth activism. It was founded by high school freshman Joshua Lou in 2021 in Cypress, California. So far, the program has expanded to over 60 branches in six countries.
Teens Against E-Waste send a group of approximately 10-12 students and 4-5 parent volunteers. The GAF board will coordinate and assist in collecting and sorting batteries. The students will wear yellow vests for visibility. The GAF board will wear the usual red vests.

• Mini refrigerators
•Other small household electronics E-waste items that will not be accepted include:
• Mercury-containing equipment
• Light bulbs or fluorescent tubes
• Aerosol cans
• Liquids
• Refrigerators
• Washing machines
• Dryers
• Dishwashers This service is for Leisure World shareholders’ personal household batteries only, no business batteries. Shareholders should separate hearing aid batteries in a small plastic bag.
The GAF believes it is important to keep the planet clean. One of the ways to do this is to recycle batteries instead of throwing them in the trash.
