Genealogy Club Genealogy Club

The Genealogy Club will meet Wednesday, April 22, at 10 a.m. in Clubhouse 3, Room 9. Guest speaker Sandy Patak will give a presentation titled “Appalachia: Yes, you truly could have Appalachian ancestors!” via Zoom. All are welcome to attend. Coffee hour starts at 9:30 a.m. The Zoom link will be distributed by email from lwgenealogy@gmail.com the week of the presentation.

Patak is the owner of Ancestry Roads, a webcaster and professional genealogist. Based in Southern Appalachia, she is regularly asked to consult and speak on Appalachian-centric topics, genealogy and history. When the word comes up in conversation with those not from Appalachia, she usually gets asked if that is “The Trail.” She’s often asked whether Appalachia is a real place or just a designation for where hillbillies come from.

Club dues are $15 for the year, which gives people access to the Genealogy Library and its paid subscriptions of Ancestry, Fold3, and Newspapers publisher edition. Renewal sheets are in the library. Fill one out and include it with the dues payment.

The club is seeking a chairperson to lead its team of Hospitality Committee volunteers. The committee assists with the club’s annual holiday party, summer potluck, and snacks and coffee for the club’s general meetings. To volunteer, email lwgenealogy@gmail.com.

The club holds weekly Theme Thursdays from 1:30-2 p.m. in the Genealogy Library. This month’s topics are:

• April 16: House genealogy and researching historic homes

• April 23: Deep dive into the Census (there’s more than just the Federal Census)

• April 30: Chew and chat The Genealogy Library is open Monday-Friday from 1-4 p.m.; Saturday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and closed Sundays. Volunteers and fill-ins are always needed. Those interested in volunteering can email lisnhow@gmail.com or call 714-390-4213.
