One day, I visited a friend experiencing health troubles in a convalescent hospital. I brought him a copy of the Bible promise in Psalm 46:1, “God is our refuge and strength, a proven help in troubles.” I showed these words to his wife, and she turned to her bedridden husband and said, “Listen to this; it is for us.” As she began to read, she choked up and had to make repeated attempts before she could go on. Finally she succeeded in reading the whole psalm. Martin Luther translated this promise, “a mighty fortress is our God.” Another hymn writer paraphrased, “O God our help in ages past, our hope for years to come/Our shelter from the stormy blast and our eternal home.” People of faith have found this promise to be true. We find the only safe and secure place is in the Lord. Our Savior put it simply when he said, “Come unto me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest,” Matthew 11:28. Whoever believes in him will not be disappointed.
