Shuffleboard Club
High energy abounds at the Courts Building with the Friday morning league playing on all six courts every week and the Tuesday evening league generally having four players with the opportunity to play a non-competitive game before their scheduled league game.
Team captains have reported the response from players is that the season has started with fun and camaraderie in excellent form.
With colds, flu, and other maladies prevalent this winter season, substitutes for league players who cannot participate any given week are vital to the success of league competition.
Already, at least one morning of league play saw five players unable to attend due to health concerns. With the help from the Tuesday evening league players Sandy Derouin and Karen Mendon, the competitive games continued without any forfeited games. A potential substitute list is being created to keep all games for the season on schedule.
The Tuesday evening league played their first games on Jan. 10 with the Hot Shots—captained by Jack O’Brien—and the Night Sliders—captained by Sally Fowler—competing. The Night Sliders dominated the night, winning 10 of 12 games with six allgame winners: Roger Bennett, Sally Fowler, John Mount, Mick O’Connell, Zoe Pickell and Red Ryals. The Tuesday league played their second game on Jan. 16 and their results will be included in next week’s article.
The Friday morning league played on Friday, Jan. 13, with no particularly bad luck. In fact, Sung Yi luckily showed up to substitute, which prevented a forfeited game. The club thanks all the people being flexible enough to play where a substitute is needed. The two winning teams from the previous week, the Hot Rods and the Smashers, tied with six wins each. The All-Game winners included Smashers Kay Mount and Roger Bennett and Doris Morton for the Hot Rods. The Bumpers and the Flying Disc’s met and the Bumpers dominated, winning eight of 12 games. The all-game winners for the Bumpers included Nancy Reid, Carol Schubeck, Dan Habel and Carol Johnson. John Mount represented the Flying Discs as an all-game winner.
Regularly scheduled open-play/pick-up games have resumed on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9-11, free for all club members and any interested LW residents. For those wanting to practice in the evenings, the courts are open from 6-8 on Tuesday evenings. For more information, call or text Kay Mount at 775527-0426.
