The Leisure World Art League will hold a free workshop on sketching on Jan. 13 at 6 p.m. in Clubhouse 4.

Each month, the league provides free hands-on workshops and demonstrations funded by a grant from the Golden Age Foundation for the purpose of fostering artistic expression and appreciation. Workshop attendees receive all the art supplies needed—free of charge—to create their own works of art.

The Jan. 13 drawing workshop will be presented by Richard E. Scott, author of “Sketching—from Square One to Trafalgar Square.” Scott explained, “a chance meeting with a student who was struggling to learn drawing inspired in me a new way to teach drawing. I then turned this method into a class, which then evolved into a book. The book became a text for art and design programs throughout the U.S. and then found its way into museum bookstores. Museums then brought me in to teach the ideas to the broader public, which then expanded to traveling across the U.S. and Europe to teach drawing and painting.”

Workshop attendees will learn:

• How to draw anything with excellent accuracy.

• How to see with the eyes of an artist.

• How to apply emotion to select and sketch compelling subjects.

• What separates artistic expression from merely copying. The event also provides an opportunity for residents to display their artwork and to be voted “most popular.” To have artwork displayed, bring it to Clubhouse 4 by 5:30 p.m.
