WA-RITE

Wa-Rite is a female-only club that meets on Friday mornings from 9-10 in Clubhouse 3, Room 1. Weigh-ins are from 8-8:45. Dues are $10 a year, plus 10 cents upon signing in. LW ID cards must be shown. Women who want support on their weight-loss journey and to meet like-minded people are welcome to stop by no later than 8:45 to weigh in and complete the registration paperwork.

On Oct. 17, Darleen Gardner shared that members lost a total of 12 pounds in the past week. Joy Nasser once again was named the biggest loser with a half-pound loss. She also won $10 for meeting her short-term goal. Nasser said riding her bicycle for three miles around Leisure World daily, plus not eating ice cream every day, works for her.

Eileen Kotecki spoke about balance and stability—common issues in older adults. She said that aside from aging, balance can also be affected by cataracts, bone and muscle loss, blood thinning medications and some prescription drugs. Kotecki recommends strengthening legs and core through exercise. She said that Balance and Stability Club classes led by Adrienne Rosenfeld offer just that. The classes are held on Tuesdays (except the first Tuesday of the month) in Clubhouse 2, from 10-11 a.m. The cost is $5 per class and free for people over 90.

The weekly food for thought was: “The healthiest weight loss is the steadiest one. Steady and slow is the way to go.”
