On Nov. 10, about 50 LW residents attended a presentation in Optum HCC by orthopedic surgeon Armin Arshi, M.D., FAAOS, to learn about arthritis, joint replacement and treatment options. This was an RSVP-based event, and every attendee enjoyed a lunch provided by Dr. Arshi.
Dr. Arshi is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon who practices in Los Alamitos, Long Beach and Newport Beach hospitals. He talked about causes and treatments for arthritis—a degenerative disease that leads to loss of cartilage in joints and affects many people over time. Genetics, repetitive motion, previous injuries and active lifestyles such as heavy lifting are the risk factors for developing arthritis.
He said that arthritis can be managed without surgery through regular exercise, overthe- counter medications, splints or injections. “Surgery should be the last resort—when pain is unbearable and all other options show no signs of relief,” said Arshi.
He also addressed four common arthritis myths.
• Not everyone with arthritis needs surgery. Non-surgical options, such as anti-inflammatory and topical medications, and steroid or gel injections that are covered by most insurance providers are often an effective alternative.
• Unlike before, modern implants last for decades thanks to the materials and the robotic-assisted surgical technology.
• Joint replacement surgery is safe and predictable with a success rate of 85—90% and low complication rates. About 75% of the patients return home the same day and recover within 6—12 weeks. The complication rates are typically very low, about 1—2%, and most likely to affect people with high BMI.
• Patients can return to active lifestyles, including walking, swimming, golfing and cycling in a matter of weeks. Arshi also added that the ongoing research and industry partnerships allow for advancements in procedures and faster recovery. Arshi ended his presentation with a Q& A session and encouraged a diet high in protein, low in refined carbohydrates and regular activity to support joint health.
