WEST NILE VIRUS

The Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District has confirmed that mosquito samples infected with West Nile virus were found in Leisure World ( for more information, see Council Comments on page 4). The surveillance traps were set in an area bordered by St. Andrews Drive, Golden Rain Road, El Dorado Drive and Oakmont Road. Inspectors will be in the area to check known sources of mosquito breeding and to try to identify any unknown sources. If mosquitos continue to test positive for West Nile virus, adult mosquito control may be conducted. Vector control routinely sprays larvicide to kill mosquitos in their breeding habitats before they mature into adults.

Precautions include wearing mosquito repellent, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. Precautions include closing all unscreened doors and windows and repairing screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering living spaces. Residents are also urged to dump any sources of standing water, which are breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
