Mutual 1 resident Michael Oh celebrates 85th birthday

Mutual 1 resident Michael Oh Mutual One celebrated his 85th birthday in Clubhouse 4 with over 135 friends and family from all over the country.
Oh moved to Leisure World 21 years ago in February 2004 as a vacation home after he retired from the Port of Oregon over 30 years ago. The plan was to go back and forth to his Vancouver, Washington, hometown and Leisure World to enjoy his retirement, but after he lost his loving wife of 47 years, he decided to stay in Leisure World permanently.
While living in Leisure World, Oh played table tennis for hours, swam daily, bicycled each morning to the River End Café (now the Beach House), attended Sunshine Club meetings, and traveled to Maui from 2013 to 2020 for vacation every year.
Oh quickly transitioned from the wet and rainy city of Portland, Oregon, to Leisure World by participating in activities and clubs, including the Video Producers Club, becoming a cameraman at community events, helping at Sunshine Club events, and joining the Joyful Line Dance Club.
There are not many clubs Michael Oh didn’t help film. He shot video for the Cabaret Entertainers, Suede Sole Dancers, Hui O Hula, and the Filipino Association of Leisure World’s (FALW) parties including Valentine’s Day, the annual luau and Shimbang Gabi. He loved capturing the special moments for the community so the SBTVChannel 3 station could share it with those who couldn’t attend the events.
Oh takes a walk with a caregiver each morning and so many people give him a smile to say hello and hug, which he says means the world to him.
Among the many family and friends who traveled for the party include Oh’s daughter Miki from Seattle, son Ken from San Francisco, and brother Randy Oh, friends from the Sunshine Club, FALW, Video Producers Club, Joyful Line Dance Club, plus longtime neighbors and Amphitheater buddies. The party was hosted by his longtime life-partner Anna Derby to celebrate his presence, his spirits, his beautiful smile and to encourage him.
