Y Service Club will hold reunion for past members
Residents who were members of the now-defunct Y Service Club of Leisure World are invited to attend a club reunion on Aug. 27. The Y Service Club wants to have as many past members attend as possible.
The club officially disbanded on July 14, 2022. Despite recruitment efforts, it was unable to attract enough younger and able-bodied volunteers to carry out its mission.
For nearly four decades, the Y Service Club helped thousands of residents with common non-professional tasks they were no longer able to do independently and safely.
The goals of the club were twofold: to provide direct voluntary service to shareholders on request; and to financially contribute to local YMCA projects focused on youth programs.
To accomplish these fundraising goals, club members sponsored well-attended pancake breakfasts, organized monster rummage sales and conducted trivia contests that attracted many enthusiastic participants.
The club’s remaining $6,000 was donated to the YMCA when it finally dissolved.
The club embodied the words of the late and much loved club president Margaret Humes: “Serve God by serving each other.” During the club’s active years, members bonded as friends and miss seeing and talking with each other. All past members are encouraged to attend the Y Service Club reunion.

Once organizers have a better idea of how many people will attend, specific plans will be made and publicized.
Members of the Y Service Club surround a Los Altos YMCA director in January 2016. The YMCA was the main recipient of club donations. The club disbanded in 2022 and is organizing a reunion.
