Guys & Gals Tournament

On Aug. 18, the Leisure World Guys & Gals Tournament was played at the Turtle Lake Golf Course. Three flights of oneman- and-one-woman teams participated for best net scores, four circle holes (within a 5-foot circle), and two closest-to-the-pin challenges. This week, only two of the rounds were in excess of net 10 below par, with one round at net 11 under par. This is substantially less than last month’s tournament.

A total of 33 teams participated through the early morning and into the afternoon. The greens and fairways were in very good condition, but the tee boxes have deteriorated. They are still in poor shape, with very low or little growth, more than a few bare spots, some wetness and numerous unrepaired divots. This undoubtedly contributed to the higher scores compared to last month.

At the opening tee time, the weather was overcast, humid and regrettably windless. This continued through the morning into the second round and into the early afternoon, when the sun decided to make an appearance. With the cooler weather and only fair overall course conditions, 29 of the 33 rounds were net at or below par. There were four circle hole winners but no holes-in-one.

All golfers are asked to repair their ball marks on the greens; if divot repair bottles are on the tees, they should be used to fill divots. The greens are starting to resemble Swiss cheese, and there are so many divots that sections of the tees are becoming unusable.

All scores below are net (gross score minus handicap). A Flight encompasses golfers with handicaps of 0-10; B Flight, 11-13; and C Flight, 14-18.

A Flight Winners: First place: tie between Paul Alloway/Ann Tran and Won Song/Jane Song, a terrific 9 under 45; second: Bob Turner/Janice Turner, a very nice 7 under 47; third: tie between John Kolthoff/Anne Walshe and Glen Barry/Karen Mendon, a fine 6 under 48; fourth: tie between Dong Kim/Devora Kim and Bruce Bowles/Linda Herman, a nice 4 under 50.

B Flight Winners: First place: Trai Nguyen/Sally Park, a fantastic 10 under 44; second: Hyon Shin/ Sang An, a superb 7 under 47; third: tie between Byron Schweitzer/ Bert Thompson and Bill McKusky/Joyce Basch, a super 6 under 48; fourth: tie between Joon Sup Yoon/Young Yoon and Jay Kim/Myung Kim, a wonderful 4 under 50.

Closest to the pin on the par-3 eighth hole was Trai Nguyen and Bert Thompson. On the par-3 17th hole, Glenn Barry was closest for the men, and Yvonne Yim for the ladies.
