Hui O Hula: Hawaiian Dance Club Hui O Hula: Hawaiian Dance Club

Hui O Hula continues to spread the aloha spirit and the art of hula with twice-weekly dance lessons, but with a slight schedule change following the end of daylight saving time. Tuesday classes, taught upstairs in Clubhouse 6, will now begin at 12:30 p.m. instead of 1; and Thursday classes, which meet at the medical conference room next to the LW pharmacy, will begin at noon instead of 1 p.m. starting today, Nov. 5.

Hula dancers and instructor Jojo Weingart welcome all newcomers to join. No experience is necessary.

In November, the club is busy preparing for its Christmas party on Saturday, Dec. 19, from 1-3 p.m. at Clubhouse 4. All LW residents and their guests are invited. There will be Christmas music, hula and holiday cheer. The class’s current subject is “Silent Night” in both Hawaiian and English, along with other festive favorites like “Christmas in the Isles Again.” To reserve a table for 8-10 guests, notify the club ahead of time by call or text to 562-338-1502.

An outing of dinner and Hawaiian music is planned for Nov. 8, when the dancers will visit Simply Fish restaurant in Costa Mesa for its Luau Sunday, featuring Hawaiian musicians Kamaki Keawe and longtime Hui O Hula friend Horacio De Jesus. The dancers are practicing special hula numbers such as “Puamana,” “He Aloha No O Waianae” and more to entertain diners while enjoying an evening of Hawaiian music and friendship.

Following its monthly performance at the Optum Health Care Center, dancers posed with the festive Halloween decorations. During Halloween week, dancers entertained patients and staff with a performance of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" with zombie dance moves.
