Compost bin liners reduce odor and pests

GRF PURCHASING

Leisure World residents are encouraged to discard their food scraps and organic waste in bioplastic compostable or biodegradable bags.

Though these types of liners are optional, bags help contain odors and provide a physical barrier against pests. In addition, they also help keep bins clean and free of foul-smelling, decomposing organic waste.

Any liners must be clear or translucent green and the bag contents must be visible. Acceptable organics will be processed, but the bags will not be recycled or composted, according to Athens Services.

Residents can purchase compost bin liners at the GRF Purchasing Office located in the Maintenance Yard. The offi ce offers small, 3-gallon food scrap bags that are commercially compostable. One box contains 25 bags and costs $6 (tax and processing fee included).
