LW Men’s Golf League

It was an overcast and humid morning that greeted 10 golfers of the Leisure World Men’s League at Willowick Golf Course in Santa Ana on July 13. Willowick is a 6,000-yard par 71 course that is long, flat and has no water hazards. With two par 5s over 510 yards, and four long par 3s, the course is a challenge for seniors. With bumpy fairways, the standing joke is that “You should make your chiropractic appointment for the afternoon after you play Willowick.” Five of the 10 golfers scored at or below net par, and there were a few low scores.

There were four birdies—one each by Gary Stivers, Chris Lankford, Bruno Santillo and Randy Massaro. Closest to the pin challenges were won by Massaro on No. 4, and Fujio Norihiro on 12. Santillo and Tom Ross had fewest putts for the round.

Net score equals gross minus handicap. A flight winners (handicaps of 1-19): Lankford and Santillo, first place; Clay Fischer, second; Dave LaCascia, third; Jim Goltra, fourth; Stivers and Norihiro, fifth.

B flight winners (handicaps of 20 and higher): Massaro, first place; Ross, second; Bob Munn, third.

The league plays every Monday at four local courses. Advance league reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.
