Redeemer Lutheran and St. Theodore Canterbury
On Sunday, July 19, the congregations of Redeemer Lutheran Church and St. Theodore of Canterbury Episcopal Church will celebrate the eighth Sunday after Pentecost at 10:30 a.m. at 13564 St. Andrews Drive. All are welcome to join.
Rev. Murray D. Finck will return to the pulpit this week with a sermon titled “Shining Like the Sun.”
All are welcome to join after service for fellowship in the Fellowship Hall for coffee, tea, cookies and snacks.
The congregations are still collecting food for those in need.
The church council will meet on Wednesday, July 22, at 1:30 p.m.
Beginning July 22, the Bible study group will begin a series entitled “The Life, Ministry, and Mission of Jesus” from all four of the Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. In addition to the lessons, the group will watch episodes from the made-fortelevision series “The Chosen.”
People can meet on the first and third Mondays of the month to help the congregation prepare crafts and for the next holiday bazaar. The next meeting is Monday, July 20, at 10 a.m., downstairs in the Fellowship Hall. There will be planned projects with directions, and all the materials provided at the meeting.
The gospel lesson this week is from Matthew 13:24 -30, 36-43. The passage explores why there is evil in the world and why a loving God would allow evil to continue around good people.
It is always human choice that brings evil into the world. Most people are not out there doing evil purposefully, usually it is an evil of omission; things a person could or should have done to help build God’s kingdom but choose not to do.
God did not create evil; evil exists where God is not. It is a believer’s choice to do or not do evil.
God gave humans free will, to make the choice to follow Jesus or not. However, there are also consequences for a person deciding not to follow Jesus, which Jesus also outlines in the passage.
