LW Men’s Golf League
On June 22, the morning fog gave way to sunshine at tee time for the 13 golfers of the Leisure World Men’s Golf League at David L. Baker Golf. Then the “June Gloom” marine layer came back in and there was no sun until the last hole. Whether or not this helped the golfers is uncertain, but every golfer scored at or below net par with several very good rounds. The greens and fairways were in good shape with some work to be done on tee boxes. Baker is a 4,000-yard par 62 executive course that has numerous water hazards and is relatively flat.
There were 11 birdies—two each by Jim Goltra and Bruno Santillo, and one each by Gary Stivers, Fujio Norihiro, Sam Choi, Dave LaCascia, Larry Hillhouse, Kyle Van and Randy Massaro.
There were five closest to the pin challenges instead of the usual two. These were won by Norihiro, No. 3; Goltra, No. 7 and 10; Stivers, No. 12; and Choi, No. 18. LaCascia, Tom Ross and Massaro had fewest putts for the round.
Winners included LaCascia, first place; Santillo, second; Massaro, third; Goltra and Mike Jimenez, fourth; Ross, fifth; Choi, sixth; Hillhouse, Norihiro and Van, seventh; Won Park, eighth; Clay Fisher and Stivers, ninth.
The league plays every Monday at four local courses, all within 15-20 minutes of Leisure World. Advance league reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.
There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter. Rewards are given for low net in each flight, birdies, closest to the pin on two par threes, and for the lowest number of putts in each flight. Holes-in-one and eagles are generously rewarded. Those interested in playing can contact Gary Stivers at 714-313-3697 or Dave LaCascia at 801-674-5975.
