Free gun storage kits available
GUN STORAGE CHECK WEEK
As part of Gun Storage Check Week, observed June 1 through June 7, the Seal Beach Police Department has partnered with Project ChildSafe, a national firearm safety education program, to promote responsible gun ownership and safe storage practices in the home.
To support this initiative, the Seal Beach Police Department is offering free gun safety kits, which include a cable-style gun lock and safety instructions. The kits are available to community members in the Seal Beach Police Department lobby, 911 Seal Beach Blvd., during business hours Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m., while supplies last. Distribution is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Tips for Firearm Safety in the Home
• Always keep firearms pointed in a safe direction.
• Store firearms unloaded and locked in a secure cabinet, safe, or vault.
• Store ammunition separately in a locked location. • Use a locking device that renders the firearm inoperable when not in use.
• Educate family members about gun safety and ensure children know not to touch unattended firearms.
Improper storage of firearms is not only dangerous—it can be criminal. Under California Penal Code §25100, a person may be charged with a crime if they keep a loaded firearm where a child is likely to gain access and cause injury or death.
