Security Services director

As we are now into the fifth month of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Security Department continues to provide vital services to the community.

I wanted to address some questions and issues that have been brought to our attention over the last few months.

Why are there are new security officers at the Main Gate?

When the crisis began, nearly 40 percent of the security staff chose to remain at home for health reasons. This represents over 600 hours a week of security that needed to be filled. Without the third party vendor supplying back-up, the security function at Leisure World would have been severely impacted. The department continues to have GRF security officers on duty. They work as watch commanders, patrol officers and conduct all interactions during incidents with residents inside the community.

• I still see speeding inside thecommunity.IstheSealBeach Police Department still issuing citations?

Be assured that Seal Beach Police Department is still conducting traffic enforcement at LWSB. We realize that there are violations that occur everywhere inside the community, and we advise Seal Beach PD on all issues regarding traffic safety. Issuing citations is only a part of the overall traffic safety program. We are working closely with the SBPD, along with insurance companies and AAA, to advise residents on how to continue to operate vehicles safely, along with the very sensitive and emotional topic of when to give up driving.

• Why hasn’t there been a monthly recap of security incidents in the LW Weekly lately?

Over 90 percent of the calls and incidents Security responds to are paramedic calls to a residence, and fortunately, nearly 99 percent of all calls for service involve no crime.

Overall, the incident rates for crime are very small, mostly involving petty theft or “hit and run” incidents with parked vehicles.

Every time there is a major incident, we ensure information is reported on the LW Live email alert and in the LW Weekly.

However, since residents have asked for more monthly security statistics, we will place this information in LW Weekly starting in in September.
