Hui O Hula: Hawaiian Dance Club
Hui O Hula, the LW Hawaiian dance club, meets upstairs in the Clubhouse 6 Mirror Room on Tuesdays at 1 p.m., and at Veterans Plaza on Thursdays at 1. New dancers especially enjoy Christmas favorites such as “Mele Kalikimaka” and “Silent Night.”
This season, dancers have performed at Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, the LW Christmas tree-lighting celebration, the North Seal Beach Community Center luncheon, Breakfast with Santa at the Seal Beach Marina Community Center and at various assistedliving centers.
Season highlights include joining the LW Karaoke Club to performed Christmas hula to live holiday singing; and dancing “The Twelve Days of Christmas” together with LW Weekly staff. Both collaborations were joyful and energetic. Hui O Hula is grateful to the Karaoke Club leaders Walt Bier and Marge (Margie) Thompson and their club members, as well as the LW Weekly editor-inchief Ruth Osborn, Hui O Hula’s editor Emma DiMaggio and their colleagues for the warm welcome.
Hui O Hula extends sincere mahalo nui loa (many big thanks) to Dr. Binh Vu, the music director at Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church for inviting dancers to perform “The Prayer” during Sunday service. Vu, chair of the Performing Arts Department at Santiago Canyon College, has shared his musical gifts around the world. This collaboration, grounded in respect and inclusiveness, was profoundly meaningful to Hui O Hula’s multicultural dancers. The six performers were greatly touched by the kindness of the congregation.
On Christmas Day, dancers will bring music and dance to the Clubhouse 6 Hospitality Room, greeting the morning coffee crowd starting at 9:30 a.m. The club thanks GAF Board director and Hospitality Room lead Carl Kennedy for the invitation. Hui O Hula has enjoyed entertaining this cheery group for well over a decade. All are welcome to stop by any weekday morning, including Christmas Day, for a cup of coffee, a chat and a little laughter.
