How to prepare ahead for winter storms
Southern California experienced an atmospheric river last weekend that dropped a record-breaking amount of rain in downtown Los Angeles and soaked Leisure World.
As winter approaches, the likelihood of winter storms and heavy rains will increase. According to the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center, overall flood risk will be reduced this year due to La Nina weather conditions— which signals a drier-than-average winter in Southern California—but December-February remains the likeliest period for rainy days.
The GRF Service Maintenance Department pays special attention to weather forecasts during this time. When heavy rains are expected, maintenance crews prepare the community days ahead of time, monitoring Leisure World’s storm drains to ensure they are clear of debris and can adequately handle heavy water flows.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local surf and weather conditions and take steps to protect themselves and their property.
Here are some safety tips to practice during heavy rains:
• Wait to drive in flooded areas until floodwaters recede. Driving on flooded streets causes wakes to form (even at low speeds) and pushes water up onto

• For everyone’s safety, keep children and pets out of floodwater. Even shallow water can contain debris or bacteria that may cause illness.
• Monitor the Seal Beach Police Department’s social media outlets (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter/X) for information updates.
• If you notice any leaks, fallen trees or tree branches, call GRF Security at 562-594-4754.
• Secure patio furniture with a waterproof cover or tarp. Bring cushions indoors when appropriate. Heavy winds may cause cushions to fly off, and excessive moisture can cause mold and other damage.
