LW Men’s Golf League

Seven golfers of the Leisure World Men’s Golf League and guest Nancy Smith played at the par-71 Willowick Golf Course in Santa Ana on April 18.

Willowick is slowly improving the course. Last week the greens were punched and sanded, causing very irregular and inconsistent putting surfaces. A “two putt” rule was instituted meaning once on the green players could take two putts and pick up their ball or putt out. Normally this would generate low scores, but only three golfers shot net under par.

Jae Choi and Bob Munn had fewest putts, and Munn also captured both closest to the pins. Gary Stivers had the one birdie for the round.

Winners: (net score: gross minus handicap) A flight winners: Chris Lankford, 7 under par 64, first place; Jae Choi, 6 under 65, second; Stivers, Dave LaCascia and Clay Fischer, third.

B flight winners: Munn, 1 Due to a scheduling conflict, the next LW Men's Golf Club meet- ing has been moved from Wednesday, May 7, to Tuesday, May 6, in Clubhouse 3, Room 1, at 9 a.m.

under 70, first place; Bill McKusky, second.

Six golfers and guests Sergio Borbon and Dominic Bautista confronted the par-70 River View Golf Course in Santa Ana on April 21. The Santa Ana riverbed runs through the middle of this course, and golfers must cross the sand and water that remains from the winter rains several times.

As the back nine is a full 500 yards longer than the front nine, good scoring requires consistency on both halves. With excellent playing conditions, every player shot net under par. There were six birdies: Clay Fischer had three, Chris Lankford had two, and Dave LaCascia had one. LaCascia and Tom Ross had fewest putts for the round. Fischer shot an excellent 76 gross and was closest to the pin on the 150-yard par-3 second hole. LaCascia was closest on the 100-yard par-3 ninth and also shot his age with a 76 gross.

A flight winners: Fischer, 9 under 61, first place; LaCascia, 8 under 62, second; Gary Stivers, 6 under 64, third; Chris Lankford, 2 under 68, fourth.

B flight winners: Ross, 6 under 64, first place; Bob Munn, 1 under 69, second.

The Monday and Friday golf leagues play at four local courses. Advance league reservations are required with a sign-up sheet available at each round.

There is a prize pool for each round that players are not obligated to enter. Those interested in playing can contact Gary Stivers at 714-313-3697 or Dave LaCascia at 801-674-5975.
