Where We Live Club

Driver and pedestrian safety affects every resident in Leisure World. Whether they are behind the wheel, walking to a clubhouse, crossing the street, riding a mobility device, or trying to get safely from one place to another, residents all share the same roads and pathways. In a community with a large senior population, safety presents challenges that deserve thoughtful attention.

The Where We Live Club will meet Monday, Oct. 5, from 6-7 p.m. in Clubhouse 3, Room 2, with a panel to discuss traffic and pedestrian safety in Leisure World. The panel includes Seal Beach City Council Member Nathan Steele and Mayor Ben Wong, Seal Beach Police Chief Michael Henderson, GRF Board President Jeff Mulqueen and GRF Board Secretary Namil Shin.

The club wants this meeting to be more than a presentation. It wants it to be a community conversation and an opportunity to brainstorm ideas, asking “What can we do to make our streets safer for both drivers and pedestrians?” Are there changes in education, awareness, enforcement, signage, traffic patterns, or community practices that could help? What responsibilities do drivers and pedestrians share? How can the city, law enforcement, the GRF and residents work together?

There may not be one simple answer. But meaningful solutions often begin when the people sit down together, listen to one another, and start asking the right questions.
