Lifestyle tips to fight off colon cancer

According to the World Health Organization, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide and is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths across the globe.

The American Institute for Cancer Research notes that lifestyle factors are among the main risk factors for colorectal cancer. Those factors, however, are manageable, and may improve the outcomes in relation to a colorectal cancer diagnosis.

Physical activity

People who are more physically active have better health outcomes after a colorectal cancer diagnosis than those who live a sedentary lifestyle. While there is no guarantee such outcomes will improve by incorporating physical activity into a daily routine, studies show that regular exercise can benefit anyone living a sedentary lifestyle to get up and move more frequently.

Diet

People who eat more whole grains such as quinoa, brown rice, oatmeal, whole grains and popcorn have a lower risk of developing colon cancer. At least three servings (90 grams) of whole grains every day may lower colorectal cancer risk by 17%. Those who have difficulty consuming whole grains after colorectal cancer treatment, including surgery, could gradually reintroduce whole grains under the supervision of a health professional.

Sugary drinks

Sugary drinks such as soda have been associated with a number of negative health outcomes, all of which are risk factors for type 2 diabetes and colon cancer. Sugar contributes to obesity and insulin resistance—known catalysts for colon cancer. Those who consume less sugar have better health outcomes after being diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

Colorectal cancer is a common and often deadly disease. But the right lifestyle choices may prevent it or make it easier to overcome.
