Hui O Hula offers free hula lessons on Tuesdays at 1 p.m. upstairs in Clubhouse 6; and on Thursdays at 1 p.m. in the conference room next to the Optum Health Care Center. All are welcome.

The club will hold a Ho‘ike Party on April 18 at Clubhouse 4 starting at 2 p.m. The event promises an afternoon of hula, live music and dancing. Hula dancers have been rehearsing with Barefoot Wahine musicians Carrie Kumabe, Diana Pemstein and Chris Wright, who will perform popular island rock music after the hula program. Music will also be provided by Ron Hom from band H3O, Hawaiian musician Pete Kahele on steel guitar and Craig Wilson, the band leader of Coconut Breeze.

Guests are welcome to bring food and drink. Tables and chairs will be available. A large dance floor will make it easy for people to enjoy the music. A 50/50 drawing is also planned. For more information, call or text 562-338-1502.

On March 22, family, friends and neighbors gathered at Clubhouse 4 for a celebration of life honoring LWer Ray Geierman. The program was thoughtfully put together by his wife, Dorothy Ferrington. The afternoon was filled with music, stories, and friendship as well as a generous spread of delicious food. Geierman moved into Leisure World 10 years ago. Together, Geierman and Ferrington became cherished members of the community through karaoke, choral, the Video Producers Club and The Greenbelt Singers.

Karaoke Club members Lori “Lolo” Chamberlain, Barbara May, and Susie “ShigShig” Yokomi, who also dance with Hui O Hula, joined dancers Susan Cucci and Joanne “jojo” Weingart in offering “The Prayer” in Geierman’s memory, while Karaoke Club member Betty Bagstad sang “I’ll Remember You.” These tributes were a heartfelt gesture of aloha for a man whose life was clearly well lived and deeply loved.
