Wa-Rite celebrates a massive weight loss for the week Wa-Rite celebrates a massive weight loss for the week

Wa-Rite is a femaleonly club that meets on Friday mornings from 9-10 in Clubhouse 3, Room 1. Weigh-ins are from 8-8:45. Dues are $10 a year, plus 10 cents upon signing in. LW ID cards must be shown. For support on a weight-loss journey, women are welcome to stop by at 8:15 to weigh in and complete the registration paperwork.

On Feb. 13, members learned that the club lost 23 pounds for the week. Joyce Brannon was the biggest loser with a 4-pound loss. She credits her success to eating at home instead of eating out.

After welcoming new members, the club voted on its board of directors, all of whom remained the same. They are: Judy Chambers, president; Bev Bender, first vice president; Linda Rich, second vice president; Jeanette Williams, secretary; Joyce Brannon, treasurer; Darleen Gardner, recordkeeper, and Henrietta Peavy, assistant recordkeeper.

Chambers explained the origins of Wa-Rite’s flag that was created in 1980. She shared an opening paragraph of the LW Weekly article from Oct. 23, 1975, that reads: “Lost somewhere in Leisure World 1,699 of pure fat; no reward is offered as we don’t want it back!” When Wa-Rite formed in February 1968, there were 60 members with a waiting list. The club met every Friday in Clubhouse 3, Room 1, just like it does now.

The weekly food for thought was: “Stages of a woman’s life: grow up to fill out, to slim down, to hold it all in, and the heck with it.”
