Hui O Hula: Hawaiian Dance Club
Hui O Hula is Leisure World’s Hawaiian Dance Club, offering free hula lessons every Tuesday and Thursday at 1 p.m.
All residents—regardless of skill level—are welcome to dance, observe, or simply enjoy the music and the friendly atmosphere. Hui O Hula dancers welcome all newcomers with aloha. For class information, call or text 562-338-1502.
This week, dancers are practicing He Aloha No O Wai’anae, a hula that celebrates the west coast of O’ahu and its rich cultural heritage. The dance honors the famous Makaha Point Lighthouse, an iconic landmark overlooking the Pacific Ocean near the town of Wai’anae. First lit in 1906, the 56-foot lighthouse, painted in

striking white and red, has guided ships for more than a century and remains a proud symbol of O’ahu’s rugged western shoreline. Dancers are learning to use hand movements to portray the sweeping beam of the lighthouse.
With Valentine’s Day approaching, Jojo has also introduced the beloved romantic hula Lei Nani, meaning Beautiful Lei. Dancers are enjoying its expressive movements and hope to perform Lei Nani for the North Seal Beach Community Center lunch crowd.
On Saturday, April 18, at 5 p.m., Hui O Hula will host a free Hawaiian music and hula party featuring live music and hula inspired by the island of O’ahu for all residents as well as guests.
