Sketch workshop wows largest-ever league crowd
LW ART LEAGUE
The largest crowd ever to attend an Art League monthly meeting was wowed by a workshop conducted by Richard Scott, author of “Sketching from Square One … to Trafalgar Square.” Scott’s presentation brought over 80 Leisure World residents into Clubhouse 4, where he revealed his signature approaches to drawing.
Beginning with a simple square, Scott helped all to see that sketching involves the use of three concepts: proportion, alignment and angles. Recognizing proportions enables the artist to record key visual clues on paper or canvas that match the subject matter before them. Identifying the alignment of features in the subject and recreating critical angles provides additional markers that guide an accurate representation of the subject.
Scott’s captivating presentation will help artists implement more accurate depictions of their subject matter.
People were provided tools and materials to enjoy the workshop thanks to a Golden Age Foundation grant supporting the league’s mission of bettering the lives of residents through the arts.
Raffle winner Edward Hale received a copy of Scott’s book, and Terese Smith’s oceanscape painting “Serenity” was voted most popular by workshop attendees.
The league’s Feb. 10 gathering at 6 p.m. in Clubhouse 4 will feature mosaic artist Dawn Mendelson, whose works celebrate and revere nature, both in figure and abstraction.
