Hui O Hula, the Leisure World Hawaiian dance group, offers hula lessons twice a week. On Tuesday, class is held in the mirror room upstairs at Clubhouse 6. On Thursday, class meets outdoors between the Library and Clubhouse 3 at Veterans Plaza. Both classes start at 1 p.m. Instructor Jojo Weingart welcomes all. There are ample room and chairs. For class information call or text 562-338-1502 or email Jojo@huiohula.com.

In class, two new hula have been introduced: “Palehua,” about a mountain range on the island of O’ahu, and “Logo De Pate” (translated loosely to “let’s go to the party”), both about celebrating and dancing together as a community. So far, dancers have learned to describe “Palehua” as unforgettable and majestic where breezes blow gently. They also learned how to paddle an imaginary canoe in dancing “Logo De Pate.” Several hula subjects are also being reviewed for the upcoming summer performances. In June, the hula dancers are looking forward to entertaining the good folks at Rowntree Gardens assisted living facility in Stanton. Hui O Hula has been performing there for well over a decade. Dancers enjoy bringing aloha to its residents, some of whom were once LW stockholders. There are 14 centenarians including one who just turned 108 who now live there.

The club wishes a big mahalo to Roy Nakamura and Rollin' Thunder Golf Cart Club for inviting the Hui O Hula dancers to entertain at its Hawaiian luau party.
