Wa-Rite is a femaleonly club that meets on Friday mornings from 9-10 in Clubhouse 3, Room 1. Weigh-ins are from 8-8:45. Dues are $10 a year, plus 10 cents upon signing in. LW ID cards must be shown. Women who want support on their weight-loss journey and to meet like-minded people are welcome to stop by no later than 8:45 to weigh-in and complete the registration paperwork.

The club’s record keeper Darlene Gardner reported that members lost 26 pounds for the week. The biggest loser was Jeannette Williams with 2.5-pound loss. She walked for an hour four days a week, and ate cabbage soup several times a week.

Bev Bender was not only the facilitator of this meeting but also gave an astonishing talk on asparagus.

She said that asparagus may help lower blood pressure; keep a heart, bones and kidneys healthy; may help protect against certain forms of cancer, slow the aging process including cognitive decline (along with taking Vitamin B-12) and reduce inflammation, promote regular bowel movements and support the healthy bacteria in a digestive system.

Bender added that vitamin K in asparagus is essential for blood clotting and bone health. This wonderful spring vegetable is also low in calories and high in nutrients. Half a cup of cooked asparagus is only 20 calories and offers 2 grams of fiber and 2 grams of protein. There are several varieties of asparagus other than the green one. White asparagus is more delicate, and purple variety is fruitier in flavor but smaller in size.

The weekly food for thought was: “We don’t stop playing because we get older, we get older because we stop playing.”
