Leisure World Orchestra conductor Samuel Kim, president Fred Reker and secretary Beverly Emus recently met with Margaret Gillon of the Leisure World Historical Society & Museum to learn about the group’s history. One of the oldest clubs in Leisure World, the orchestra started in 1963 in the apartment of Dr. Edgar J. Hines, who also served as conductor. He donated 10 years to the cause and even contributed music from his personal library.

After Hines passed away in 1974, orchestra members commissioned a beautiful plaque in his memory; it is now displayed by the Historical Society.

The orchestra continues on, presenting two concerts a year. The next performance is Dec. 18 at 1 p.m. in Clubhouse 4.

New members are welcome to join, especially trombone and French horn players. Anyone interested can call or text Reker at (615) 898-0669 or email him at fredreker326@gmail.com. The orchestra rehearses in the Amphitheater on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at noon.
