Nathan J. Nemnich 1930-2023 ….

Nathan J. Nemnich 1930-2023 ….

Nathan J. Nemnich 1930-2023 Nathan J. Nemnich, 92, died Jan. 9, 2023, at Los Alamitos Medical Center. He and his wife, Patricia, of Mutual 7 enjoyed the Seal Beach area and especially living in Leisure World. He was a World War II veteran, serving in underwater demolition. In 2007, Nathan wrote the following poem to his family: “If I had only one more day, I would tell my wife I loved her very much and always have. I sincerely have appreciated the good and accepted the bad days. “That is what I would say if I had one more day. “If I had only one more day, I would tell all my children I loved each one—when they were born and still love them all. “That is what I would say if I had one more day. “If I had only one more day, I would look back on my life, think about my friendships and friends, old and new. I would think back on my successes and failures—both as a husband, father, friend and tell them all—I did the best to be an example helping others. “That is what I would say if I had one more day. “If I had only one more day, I would say, I have had a good life with all the ups and downs. I loved the arts, learning to be better by reading, searching for life’s truisms and history of the worlds to know with each sunrise life begins anew. “That is what I would say if I had one more day. “If I had only one more day, I would remember all my days in the wilderness of nature’s wonders, my times hunting, fishing, enjoying the wildlife of our land and trying to teach my children, all of them, to not only enjoy these things but to respect them and preserve them the best they can. “That is what I would say if I had one more day. “If I had only one more day, I would thank God and Jesus Christ for allowing me to be on this earth to enjoy the sunrises and sunsets, to remember my World War II comrades who are gone now and remember what they sacrificed, their lives, for freedom!!! “That is what I would say if I had one more day. “If I had only one more day, I would remember on that last day with each and every sunrise that the loved ones I leave behind, their lives begin anew, as all mankind awake on another glorious day. That peace in this world is the only way every single day. That is what I would say as I leave on that one more day. May God bless and keep you all, that is my prayer for you. “That is what I would say if I had one more day.” Nathan is survived by his wife, Patricia, of 37 years; children Rink Nemnich (Linda); Terrell Nimnich (Lory); Nathan Nemnich (Suzi Roca); Sherry Perales and Kelly Neubecker (John); grandchildren Tess Nemnich, Hannah Nemnich, Andrew Nemnich, Katelyn Nemnich and Regina Ortiz (Frank); great-grandchildren Lexi Herrera, Nathan Polanco and Kaleb Ortiz. His love of family ran deep and returning to California provided a special time for sharing. He leaves behind a legacy of love and giving. His heart will go on. —paid obituary

Marian Ardelle Newman
	 Marian ….

Marian Ardelle Newman Marian ….

Marian Ardelle Newman Marian Newman was a private person, to the point of secrecy, which gave her an air of mystery and intrigue that she actively cultivated. Born to the late Otto F. and Katherine (Towne) Newman, she graduated from Oak Park River Forest High School (’48) in Illinois and was awarded a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Northwestern University (’52). She had a brief, youthful marriage to William F. Gilman and after their divorce did not remarry, saying that she never found another man who suited her as well as Bill. She worked as a personal accountant for the Henry Crown Co. in Chicago and retired to Seal Beach, in the mid-1980s. She was a woman ahead of her time, preferring to live in self-contained communities both in Chicago and California, forgoing car ownership her entire life. She enjoyed listening to jazz music, playing bridge and was proud to have lived long enough to see the Chicago Cubs win a Worlds Series. She loved international travel and the ocean cruising lifestyle. She discovered the joys of Italy early in her life and returned there often to visit. As a child, she was enthralled by the Thorne Miniature Rooms at the Art Institute in Chicago, which led to a lifetime of collecting and a post-retirement business importing and selling exquisite European made doll house furniture and accessories. Along with her parents, her brother Richard T. and his wife, Betty Ann (Cunningham) Newman preceded her in death. She is survived by her niece Ann K. Newman (Bobbie Ruth Langley), nephew Richard C. Newman, and great-niece Rachel V. Yorkis (Brandon). Her remaining family is grateful for the many doctors, nurses, social workers, caregivers and neighbors who cared for and aided Marian during the later stages of her life. She will be interred in a private ceremony at Mt. Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst, Illinois this spring.

Margaret Scammell 1922-2023 ….

Margaret Scammell 1922-2023 Margaret Scammell, an ex- long- time Leisure World resident in Mutual 5, passed away Wednesday night on Jan. 18. She was 100 years old and had been residing in Sunrise Senior Living home in Seal Beach since February 2012. She passed peacefully, comfortably, and without pain. Margaret was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on June 26, 1922. She met and married William Scammell, and they were married for 46 years. He brought her to California to be with family. They bought a home in Lakewood. It was the early 1960’s when they moved into Leisure World. She is preceded in death by her husband, Bill, four sisters and two brothers. Her favorite childhood memories were sharing a room with her sister, Bea, and family gatherings putting together puzzles or games. She and Bea were extremely close and in later years she visited her in Canada where she fixed up an apartment in Bea’s home. Marg worked as a receptionist for 25 years at Farmer Brothers. They treated her like family. She retired in 1979 to take care of Bill as his caregiver. They enjoyed many visits to Disneyland and often took family member’s kids. Marg was not only a sweet lady, but a classy one as well. She always dressed well including her springalater high heels and accessories matching each outfit. Her make up and dress were always to the tens. She was a very crafty, gifted person. She loved to sew, knit, make dolls and do needlepoint. She would open her place to LW residents to see her crafts. She also walked all the time and worked out to tapes keeping herself in great physical shape. Her independence meant more to her than anything. Even as dementia and then Alzheimer’s were taking over, she wanted to do “it” herself. Margaret was a very strong, special lady. We are so grateful to have had her in our lives.

Raymond Robert “Bob” Fitzpatrick ….

Raymond Robert “Bob” Fitzpatrick ….

Raymond Robert “Bob” Fitzpatrick 1937-2022 Raymond Robert “Bob” Fitzpatrick, 85, was born in Chicago, Illinois, on Feb. 24, 1937, and died peacefully in Orange County, California, in the presence of his loving family on Dec. 30, 2022. In 1944, Bob, along with his sister Vivian and their parents Raymond and Margaret, moved from Chicago to Long Beach, California, where Bob attended several schools some of which included St. Matthews Elementary School, Jefferson Middle School and Wilson High School. Bob joined the U.S. Army in 1955 and was assigned to the 11th Airborne Division, 503rd Regiment, in Munich, Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1958, having earned a Parachutes Badge and Good Conduct Medal. He returned to Long Beach, where he met his future wife Joan and was hired as a coach at St. Joseph Elementary School. By the time Bob and Joan married in 1959 at St. Joseph Church, coaching had become Bob’s other life’s passion, inspiring “Coach Fitz” to take classes at Long Beach City College and California State University, Long Beach, where he eventually earned a bachelor’s degree in recreation studies with a minor in coaching, while his family grew to include Coleen, Tim and Shawn. In 1970, Bob and Joan opened University Trophies, a business that allowed them to combine their love for sports, family, and community. While Bob coached, Joan ran the dayto- day production, and today, 52 years later, University Trophies is still a thriving, family-owned business. Bob went on to become the athletic director for the Los Angeles Archdiocese—Catholic Youth Organization (CYO), overseeing the Sports Department for 180 plus Catholic schools. After retiring from CYO, he returned to St. Joseph Elementary School, this time as a volunteer coach, and in 2006 he led the 7th- and 8thgrade flag football team to an undefeated season and the CYO championship. For the past 25 years, Bob and Joan enjoyed living in Leisure World (11 years in Mutual 15, past 14 years in Mutual 7) spending time with family, and—of course—cheering on their favorite teams, most notably Notre Dame Football. Bob was a proud recipient of many honors and recognitions, including a Proclamation by the City of Long Beach, the Long Beach Century Club Ernie G. Pollman Memorial Award, Catholic Charities Employee of the Year, CYO Hall of Fame and Legends Sports Bar Wall of Fame. Lastly, St. Joseph Elementary School paid the ultimate tribute to Coach Fitz by naming the school’s athletic field “Fitz Field.” Bob is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joan Fitzpatrick; daughter Coleen (Fitzpatrick) Followell; sons Tim Fitzpatrick and Shawn Fitzpatrick (Carrie Fitzpatrick); sister Vivian Kiley; granddaughter Shauna Followell; and countless others whose lives he touched. Bob leaves behind a legacy of love and invaluable life lessons, and he will live in our hearts forever. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 6220 E. Willow St., Long Beach, CA 90815 with an off-site reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent in Fitz’s memory to St. Joseph Elementary School in Long Beach.
