Join the emergency preparedness practice drill on Sept. 17

As many LW residents know “You Are On Your Own” in the event of an emergency disaster. As an initiative to minimize risk, ensure safety and reduce calamity, Boots on Ground hold a practice drill two or three times per year.

On Thursday, Sept. 17, at 10 a.m., the group will hold the third drill of the year, which will take approximately 30-45 minutes.

During the drill, radio personnel will monitor family radios on channel 13.0 for residents, and General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) Boots on Ground volunteers will be on channels 18.0 primary or 22.0 secondary. Those who have a GMRS radio, are encouraged to charge their radios and make sure it is working properly. Different channels are provided to manage heavy communication traffic.

Residents who are willing and able are encouraged to volunteer for one of the 10 Boots on Ground groups who will report as the eyes, ears, hands and feet on ground. The chart above shows where groups will go and what each one will be responsible for.

People should RSVP for the drill no later than Monday, Sept. 14, to GRF Safety Manager Eloy Gomez at eloyg@lwsb.com or call 562-431-6586, ext. 2356.

When a disaster occurs, Leisure World may or may not be part of the situation. People should tune in to alerts and warnings, have a personal gobag with emergency supplies and ready to be on their own. People should follow instructions from emergency responders, especially if alerted to shelter in place.
