Sometimes grandchildren are more receptive to messages from their grandparents than from their parents. Young people experimenting with illicit substances has become a significant health risk. Today, counterfeit pills and illicit drugs are frequently found to be laced with fentanyl, an incredibly powerful synthetic opioid. It was a factor in two thirds of the overdoses in 2025. The source is unpredictable: fentanyl cannot be seen, tasted, or smelled. Even an extremely small amount can be fatal.

Counterfeit pills are also common. Fake pills designed to look like legitimate prescription medications (such as those for ADHD or anxiety) are frequently sold through unregulated online and social media.

Its important for grandparents like Leisure World residents to encourage grandchildren to never consume any pill or substance that was not directly prescribed to them by a healthcare provider and dispensed by a licensed pharmacy.

In a medical emergency involving an opioid overdose, immediate action is necessary. Narcan (naloxone) is a safe nasal spray that can rapidly reverse the effects of an overdose and save a life. Narcan kits will be available at the Emergency Information Council’s table on June 26 at the Life Options Expo.
