Learn how to use different census data to track family histories on May 27

LW GENEALOGY CLUB

All residents are invited to attend the monthly membership meeting of the Leisure World Genealogy Club on Wednesday, May 27, at 10 a.m. in Clubhouse 3, Room 9. Coffee time starts at 9:30.

Christine Cohen will present “Read the Instructions: Details in the U.S. Census You May be Missing.”

A census record can give a snapshot of a family on a particular day. However, genealogists need to search in the federal, state, veteran, agricultural, school, police and mortality censuses. Cohen asks: “Do you take the time to read the column headings? What instructions were given to the enumerator on what to enter in the form of the abbreviation codes?” The club will review the directions to help people understand the answers.

Cohen’s enthusiasm for genealogy was piqued when she was given a typed pedigree chart, commissioned by her maternal grandfather, of their Dutch heritage from the New Netherlands in the 1650s. Cohen is a longtime member and current program director of the Whittier Area Genealogical Society (WAGS). She is a member of the Tualatin Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Society of Holland Dames, Association of Professional Genealogists, and the Society Delegate for National Genealogical Society.

The club holds weekly Theme Thursdays from 1:30-2 p.m. in the Genealogy Library, which consist of learning sessions and discussions on different topics. Upcoming topics include:

• May 21: Using tree tags in a family tree

• May 28: In honor of Memorial Day, people are invited to bring in pictures, medals and more related to their ancestor(s) who fought and share their story.

The Genealogy Library is open weekdays from 1-4 p.m., Saturdays 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and closed Sundays. To volunteer or become a substitute, call 714 390-4213 or email lisnhow@gmail.com.
