On May 12, multidisciplinary artist Leti Stiles filled Clubhouse 4 with intrigued resident artists to experience a hands-on workshop in the use of alcohol inks on ceramic tile and Yupo synthetic paper. Alcohol ink, a unique modern fluid art medium, first appeared in the late 20th century and was primarily used for abstract painting. The fast-drying, dye-based pigments are most commonly used on non-porous surfaces like Yupo paper, a waterproof, tear-resistant, ultra-smooth, non-absorbent polypropylene paper.

More familiar with traditional paints and inks, Leisure World Art League members and their guests curiously observed as Stiles gave stepby- step instructions before letting her audience explore this unique medium for themselves.

As various colored inks were dripped onto surfaces, participants observed colors that blended and crawled. Some blew the inks with straws to move or dry them, while others used cloth stamps to add texture to the color, or paint brushes to explore how to manipulate the fast-drying liquid. Alcohol was added in sprays or drops to blend, reactivate dry dyes, or completely clear surfaces of ink altogether.

The fascinating, two-hour workshop was the latest in the monthly presentations the Art League hosts to provide learning experiences for its 100-plus members. Many are lifelong artists, while others have just begun to explore the visual arts. Providing these experiences are at the core of the league’s mission to “support and promote the arts and artists through art education and community exhibition.”

Featured at the gathering were sculpture, ceramics, and paintings created by league members. Marilyn Jonas’ watercolor “Dragon Flies” was awarded the “most popular” ribbon by vote.

The Art League will meet Tuesday, June 9, at 6 p.m. in Clubhouse 4 for a presentation by artist Kacie Lyn Martinez.
