On Sunday, May 17, the congregations of Redeemer Lutheran Church and St. Theodore of Canterbury Episcopal Church will celebrate the Ascension of Our Lord at 10:30 a.m. at 13564 St. Andrews Drive. Rev. Murray Finck will preside over the Holy Communion service. All are welcome to join.

People can stay after service for fellowship in the Fellowship Hall with coffee, tea, cookies and snacks. The congregations collect donations of canned food for those in need.

There will be a special congregational meeting after service on Sunday, May 24, to update the congregation on the audio and visual project.

The Bible study will meet on Wednesday, May 20, from noon-1:15 p.m. The group is currently going through the Acts of the Apostles. People are encouraged to bring their Bibles, a friend or neighbor, and lunch. This is a great opportunity for believers to expand their knowledge of the early church and make a new friend.

Today, May 14, marks the Ascension of Our Lord. The congregation will celebrate the day on Sunday, May 17, with the first lesson from Acts 1:1-11. It begins with an explanation of what has occurred. Jesus gives the disciples a final commission: “go be witnesses to the ends of the earth.”

The word “witness” in this scriptures goes beyond the idea of someone who saw and are not affected by what happened, otherwise known as a bystander. Rather, a witness is someone who saw, experienced, and is

As Jesus ascends to heaven, the disciples cannot help but stare upward in awe of what they are seeing. Suddenly two men appear and push them out of their lethargy, saying, “There’s nothing more to see here; get to work.”

A believer’s primary witnessing does not come from gathering with other believers. Although believers need like-minded community to strengthen them for the journey, they are sent at the end of the meeting to satisfy Jesus’ desire to be with all people. Believers must go and witness to nonbelievers about what Jesus has done in their life.
