Letters to the Editor

In response to Earick Ward’s letter (June 26) giving the impression that Republican presidents do a better job on the economy than Democrats, if you Google “which party does a better job on the economy,” you get the same answer again and again. “Since World War II, according to many economic metrics including job creation, GDP growth, stock market returns, personal income growth, and corporate profits, the United States economy has performed significantly better on average under the administrations of Democratic presidents than Republican presidents.”
Of the 11 economic recessions since World War II, 10 of them started under Republicans. The one Democrat recession of six months was Jimmy Carter, because of the Arab oil embargo. By contrast Ronald Reagan had a 16-month recession and the savings and loan bailout. Donald Trump, in his first term, had the last recession and was the first president since Herbert Hoover to lose jobs. Trump also had the lowest GDP growth 0.01%, since they kept track in 1945. This Trump term may be far worse because he seems to be following the Project 2025 playbook.

The “Art in Bloom” event on June 21 was extraordinary.
First, a special thank you to the Leisure World Art League and exhibitors for presenting many art mediums. Paintings using various types of paint, clay, 3-dimensional, 2-dimensional, lapidary and quilting were featured among the 120-plus art pieces.
As a frequent viewer of art spaced far apart in museums I visited during travels in 108 countries, my viewing of this exhibition let me walk through the exhibits over a dozen times, to repeatedly take in the visual array of all this art. What a sight!
Next, hats off and a giant thank you to Gasper Monteer Realty Group, who, in conjunction with our Art League, presented this exhibition. The wine flowed practically by the barrel with Carol Gasper and Nick Monteer pouring. Plus, a giant basket of little candy bars was filled to the brim every second. I probably ate 40 little candy bars (well, maybe only 39 melted in my mouth!).
Gasper Monteer Realty Group also paid for the Koffel’s Food Truck, which offered delicious Mexican food that we ate during this exhibition.
Yes, Gasper Monteer Realty Group deserves many thanks for majorly contributing to this event’s success. This exhibition was one of the grandest Leisure World events I have attended during my eight years living here excluding those no-events Covid years!

Regarding the Peaceful Protest on No Kings Day, the small photo and article (June 19) is in no way reflective of the reality of the event, one of largest in recent LW history. The photo made it seem that only a few people attended. The three-sentences cutline did little justice to the number of people attending, and the range of their emotions. Both this, and the protest on April 19, had an estimated 400 motivated participants and were peaceful, without any instances of trouble.
We had asked for coverage by the LWNews and were advised that weekend coverage requires overtime pay for employees and it was not possible to do so.
Protestors were determined to make their feelings of disappointment and fear and anger known over the lawless and cruel actions of this president. Some were using walkers, rollators, electric and non-electric wheelchairs being pushed by family or friends, and there were many slow walkers. There was definite worry about our democracy in their hearts.
You had to be there to truly grasp the significance of the occasion. That is why we need the LW Weekly to comprehensively cover events such as these. It is a trusted source for many and it is hoped that adjustments can be made budget-wise to do better in the future. LW residents need to know what is happening in our community. Pat Kruger Mutual 9 Editor’s note: In an effort to keep costs as low as possible, the LW Weekly does not generally authorize overtime for staff coverage of weekend club events. In this case, the paper solicited event photos from residents who attended. Due to deadline constraints, only one photo with cutline information ran June 19. But the paper followed up June 26 with a story and several protest photos.

Kudos once again to Member Services Liaison Robann Arshat, and Jesse Cripps, Kathy Thayer and the rest of the recreation team for another exciting, interesting and free Life Options Expo event (June 27). Where else would they bring this much information right to our door at Veterans Circle between Clubhouses 3 and 4? The vendors were all so professional. The free swag was amazing and even the weather co-operated. This could very well be the beginning of a new era of shareholder-related focus under the leadership of this term’s recently installed GRF President Linda Herman. As the world around us becomes increasingly harsh, it’s a great opportunity to remember that LW is the very best of all places to live our golden years.
