First Christian Church First Christian Church

First Christian Church of Leisure World teaches from God’s word, the Holy Bible, most often verse by verse. It is a friendly church that welcomes all visitors to join in worship and explore God’s word together, “That we may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine” Romans 1:12.

Pastor’s Message

Genesis 22:1-12 is a story of how Abraham’s faith was tested in such a way that it is easy to question why God would ask such a horrific thing of him. Verses 1-2 say, “Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham and said to him, Abraham! And he said, ‘Here I am.’ Then He said, ‘Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you.’” Why would God ask Abraham to do such an abominable thing? The answer comes further in the story in Genesis 22:11-12, “But the Angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, ‘Abraham, Abraham!’ And he said ‘Here I am.’ And He said, ‘Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now, for I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son from Me.’” God had never intended that Isaac would die by the hand of his father. The purpose was to test Abraham’s faith and his trust in God. Abraham had finally come to a place in his fellowship with God, come through a variety of trials with God by his side and had come to understand God would not forsake him no matter the circumstance. Abraham demonstrated a deep faith and trust.

The story of Abraham and his obedience and willingness is understood as a picture of the sacrifice God made of his son, his only begotten son, Jesus, the Messiah. Romans 5:1,3 says “Therefore having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. But we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance, and perseverance, character, and character, hope.”
